Senior Mobility Advocates Recognized by
South Carolina

May 17, 2010

The annual South Carolina State Aging Awards recently honored residents and civic groups that impact the lives of seniors across the state. In a ceremony at the State House, Lt. Governor Andre Bauer recognized the efforts of several senior advocates making a difference in South Carolina, including three ITNCharlestonTrident™ volunteers.

Volunteer driver Wood Struthers received the Volunteer Service Award for the more than 800 rides he gave in the last twelve months. With a background as a pilot, first in the United States Air Force and later for United Airlines, Wood understands what’s needed to safely and reliably carry ITNCharlestonTrident member riders to and from their destinations. Wood provides rides four days week and sometimes provides as many as ten rides in a single day! Congratulations, Wood, and thank you for your service!

ITNCharlestonTrident and long-time member of the ITNCharlestonTrident Board of Trustees, David Unwin, were both finalists for the Leadership in Aging Award. ITNCharlestonTrident was lauded for its service to the community, specifically recording its 20,000th ride in April 2010 and having a robust team of volunteers which provide 46% of all rides for the 300 member riders. Unwin was recognized for his tireless advocacy for seniors and his endless involvement in numerous senior activities and organizations, where he has been effective in helping seniors get their voices heard. Congratulations to the Board and Staff of ITNCharlestonTrident and to David. Thank you for your service!

Terry Brown, Chair of ITNCharlestonTrident’s Board of Trustees, was a regional winner of the Outstanding Older South Carolinian Award for his years of support for a variety of senior programs. Brown also serves as a volunteer driver, often providing over 50 rides per month. Congratulations, Terry, and thank you for your service!

ITNCharlestonTrident Provides 20,000th Ride April 22, 2010

April 29, 2010

April 22, 2010

ITNCharlestonTrident, a dignified transportation alternative for older people who can no longer drive, provided its 20,000th ride since beginning its service in the low country on Nov. 15, 2006.

The 20,000th ride took member rider Annette Vinson to her regular beauty shop appointment on Thursday afternoon, April 22, 2010. Mrs. Vinson, who lives in the West Ashley area, has utilized the ITN service for the three and a half years ITN has served the community with the alternative transportation program. Mrs. Vinson uses the program for her medical appointments, shopping, going to the pharmacy and, of course, and her visits to her hair salon.

Mrs. Vinson was driven by volunteer driver Barbara Franklin. Barbara is one of nearly 40 ITNCharlestonTrident volunteers. In addition to being a regular volunteer driver for ITN, Barbara serves as Chair of the ITNCharlestonTirdent volunteer Committee, and Chair of the Transportation Committee of the South Carolina Aging in Place Coalition.

ITNCharlestonTrident thanks its volunteers for the great effort put forth in helping to achieve this major milestone and its community partners for their support in helping to make the ITN program a big success.

1st Annual ITNCharlestonTrident™ Oyster Roast

March 12, 2010

Folly Beach Crab Shack
March 7, 2010

Under sunny skies with a warm breeze blowing in off the ocean, the ITNCharlestonTrident ™ hosted its 1st Annual ITN Oyster Roast on Sunday, March 7th. 100 friends and supporters of the community based alternative transportation for seniors and the visually impaired in the lowcountry engaged in the “Shucking for Seniors” event. Bushels after bushels of the steaming mollusks were shucked while the participants enjoyed listening to live music by the Folly Dogs. Tunes covered the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s along with contemporary hits and requests. A silent auction attracted many competitive bidders hoping to win items ranging from website development to wine baskets. Folly Beach Crab Shack owner Ron Hill and his staff did an outstanding job of providing delicious food and drinks for the attendees. The 2nd Annual ITN Oyster Roast is expected to be even bigger and better (if that’s possible).

National Foundation Extends Funds for Innovative ITNAmerica® Program

February 22, 2010

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Internship Program a Model for Success

WESTBROOK ME – A generous grant from The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has enabled ITNAmerica to expand its successful internship program supporting sustainable transportation resources for seniors across the country.

“The initial funding for this innovative project yielded such successful outcomes we’re doing it again,” says Katherine Freund, President and Founder of ITNAmerica. “With the Foundation’s funding of nine interns in affiliate communities across the country, we raised awareness about our services while also raising significantly more money than we spent.”

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has supported the needs of low-income seniors for over 50 years. The Foundation’s 2009 grant to ITNAmerica enabled participating affiliates to generate more than $130,000 in revenue, with $20,000 of that money reserved for ITN®’s Road Scholarship Program™ for low-income seniors. In this way, the grant helped build community support for senior mobility, enabled access for all seniors, and ensured the special needs of low income seniors were not forgotten.

“The interns helped us build support that will continue to generate funds year after year,” says Freund. “With as many as 20 interns in affiliate communities across the country in 2010, we anticipate even greater success with what has now become The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Internship Program. This support will expand our commitment to more transportation resources for more people in more places.”

ITNCharlestonTrident Donor Recognition Breakfast

November 6, 2009

Donor Recognition Breakfast.

ITNCharlestonTrident invited twenty-five organizations and individuals to their donor recognition breakfast, held Wednesday, Oct. 28, as an opportunity to commend them on their hard work since beginning its dignified transportation service in 2006. The Gold Level Presidential Volunteer Service Award, consisting of a golden eagle pin as well as a letter of commendation from President Obama, was presented to volunteer driver Wood Struthers for his more than 1700 hours of volunteer service, and over 600 rides since 2008.

The special morning also recorded ITNCharlestonTrident’s 17,000th ride since beginning its service, and Board Chair Terry Brown spoke to the donors and volunteers about his appreciation for their support, emphasizing their key role in maintaining ITN’s ability to provide an efficient and cost effective service for member riders. With the combined efforts of volunteer drivers and financial donations from the community, Brown explained that ITNCharelstonTrident is able to provide their dignified service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for less than half of the actual cost of delivering the ride itself.

The group also heard from John Panagiotou, whose mother regularly used ITN’s services for medical appointments before she passed away in October. Panagiotou explained how important ITN is to the members riders and their families. Volunteer drivers were able to share fond memories of Panagiotou’s mother with whom they had built a strong bond traveling together to and from her destinations.

The recognition event was completely underwritten by members of the ITN Board of Directors. Credit is given to the following Board members and volunteers for their exceptional support of the recognition breakfast; Terry Brown (Board Chair), Paul Franklin (Board member and Financial Development Committee Chair), Barbara Franklin (Volunteer Committee Chair), Elizabeth Brown (Marketing and Public Relations Chair) and JoAnne Penington (Volunteer support staff).
