“As in other states, there are more seniors on the roads in Maine and they are driving into their 80s and beyond at far greater numbers than past generations. Nearly a quarter of Maine’s licensed drivers are over the age of 65.

As a result, the number of Mainers aged 65 and older who are involved in fatal accidents increased by 17 percent between 2012 and 2016, according to a recent analysis by TRIP, a national transportation research group. Twenty-three percent of the state’s fatal vehicle accidents involved a driver over the age of 65.

As the TRIP report notes, 79 percent of American seniors live in suburban or rural communities, making travel by car a necessity. In fact, 90 percent of travel for this age group involved a private vehicle. […]”

An aging population is one concern, but location is certainly another.

“The south side of Hall County is experiencing rapid growth and many 55-and-older communities have been built in the area with more being planned,” said Don Colombero, marketing director of Legacy Link, an Oakwood-based program that offers a variety of services for senior adults.

“Having the Healthy Aging Expo in this area allows Legacy Link to inform seniors about all of our programs.”

The Times is holding its second Healthy Aging Expo Wednesday, March 14, at The Venue at Friendship Springs, 7340 Friendship Springs Blvd., Braselton. Friendship Springs is off Spout Springs Road, a main traffic artery in South Hall.
