Volunteer of Year helps senior citizens get around

Westport resident Julie Shapiro received a “Volunteer of the Year” award from ITNCoastalCT, a community-based organization dedicated to providing senior citizens and adults with visual impairments dignified local transportation for a reasonable cost. ITNCoastalCT has been building its presence in Westport and surrounding towns over the past three years, garnering new clients as well as volunteer drivers whose shared ambition is to make it possible for seniors to maintain the quality of their lives as they age and can no longer drive.

What if you could make a big difference in someone’s life? You can save seniors and the visually impaired in our community from isolation in their homes by becoming a volunteer driver for ITNRacineCounty (Independent Transportation Network/Racine County). ITN is the only nonprofit that provides affordable, dignified, door-through-door rides within Racine County.

Apparently the accepted idea that seniors lose mental acuity as they age is simply not true – at least not for the seniors who contacted me to point out a mistake in my recent column.

Last week’s Senior Advocate stated that, “According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, of the 5.5 million drivers in our state, 2.5 million are age 70 or older.” In fact, there are 24,290,288 licensed drivers in California, as of Jan. 1, and more than 2 million of these drivers are age 70 and older.
