Senior Transportation Service to Launch in Henderson

September 29, 2009

Co-Founders Fran Smith and Nancy Sprague are pleased to announce the formation of ITNLasVegasValley™, providing transportation services for seniors and visually impaired adults.

Beginning in the City of Henderson, and ultimately operating valley-wide, ITNLasVegasValley will offer rides 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for any purpose and to any destination, using private cars, and arm-through-arm, door-through-door service.   The organization is an affiliate of the national Independent Transportation Network (ITN®), a model originally developed in Portland, Maine.

ITNLasVegasValley joins 12 other affiliates of the national umbrella organization ITNAmerica, which is the first and only national non-profit transportation network for America’s aging population.

“While our affiliates are independent nonprofits, all members may tap into ITN’s national network,” said Katherine Freund, founder and Executive Director of ITNAmerica. A member in Chicago, for example, can ride with ITNSarasota while on vacation. Volunteers can earn mileage credits that they donate to help pay for rides for a loved one in any ITN community across the country.

“ITN is a unique solution to the complex problem of senior transportation,” said Nancy Sprague.  “We were motivated by the two tragic accidents involving senior couples that drove off the parking deck of the Golden Nugget garage, as well as other frequent news stories of accidents caused by senior drivers.”  Fran Smith added, “With ITNLasVegasValley, older people don’t need to stay at home, our communities are safer and more inclusive, and adult children don’t need to leave work to provide rides.”

Members, businesses, community organizations and volunteer drivers are critical to the success of the organization which plans to begin offering rides early next year. ITNLasVegasValley invites those interested in participating to call (702) 315-0463 or email info@ITNLasVegasValley.org. More information is available at www.ITNLasVegasValley.org.

Acclaimed Social Innovator to Speak at ITNAmerica® Retreat!

September 22, 2009

We are excited to announce that Purpose Prize winner Robert Chambers will be this year’s keynote speaker at the ITNAmerica Affiliate Retreat on October 22 in Maine.
Chambers, a former car salesman, became frustrated with car dealerships taking advantage of the poor, so he founded Bonnie CLAC (Car Loans and Counseling) in 2001 to provide car loans at low-interest rates to individuals who would otherwise have no chance of getting a good car at a decent rate.
President Obama recently met with Chambers and six other social innovators at the White House, and praised them for “succeeding where others have failed; getting real, measurable results; changing the way we think about some of our toughest problems.”
Bonnie CLAC has helped more than 1,200 families finance more than $13 million in loans so they can buy a reliable car, get to their jobs, build credit, and plan for the future.

ITNAmerica announces new affiliate: ITNLasVegasValley

September 17, 2009

Las Vegas, NV (September 14, 2009) — ITNAmerica is pleased to announce its newest affiliate, ITNLasVegasValley™. The alternative transportation service for seniors and adults with visual impairments is being launched in the City of Henderson — Nevada’s second largest city and one with a heavy concentration of older adult residents.

ITNLasVegasValley will offer rides 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for any purpose and to any destination within the service area, using private cars, and arm-through-arm, door-through-door service. ITN® stands for Independent Transportation Network®, a model originally developed in Portland, Maine.

ITNLasVegasValley joins 12 other affiliates in ten states, including Kentucky, California, Connecticut, Iowa, South Carolina, Florida, Illinois, Missouri and Maine. ITNAmerica is the first and only national non-profit transportation network for America’s aging population.

“ITN is a unique solution to the complex problem of senior transportation,” said Nancy Sprague, co-founder with Fran Smith, of ITNLasVegasValley. They were motivated by the two tragic 2004 accidents involving senior couples that drove off the parking deck of the Golden Nugget garage, as well as other frequent news stories of accidents caused by senior drivers.

“With ITNLasVegasValley, older people don’t need to stay at home, our communities are safer and more inclusive, and adult children don’t need to leave work to provide rides,” Fran Smith said.

Through grassroots support, ITNLasVegasValley will become a financially sustainable non-profit organization without on-going taxpayer support for operations. Members, businesses, community organizations and volunteer drivers are critical to the success of the organization which plans to begin offering rides early next year. ITNLasVegasValley invites the public to participate by contacting them at (702) 315-0463 or info@ITNLasVegasValley.org.

Why I’m a Volunteer Driver for ITNOrlando

September 3, 2009

As the mother of two small, very active children, I often wonder where the hours in a day go. After the last bedtime story is read, as I tiptoe from my sons’ room while trying not to step on stray Lego blocks, I think about all the things I haven’t accomplished yet. I didn’t pick up the dry cleaning, thank-you notes from the kids’ birthday party last month still aren’t finished, the car’s overdue for an oil change, I’ve got a dozen emails to respond to and I haven’t called my brother in weeks. I can’t even get my spice rack organized, let alone finish the book project I’ve been working on for six months. How could a person like me be of any use to the Independent Transportation Network? What makes me think I could possibly find the time? And why would I want to do it?
